In the surroundings of Motta Camastra, in the district of Larderia-Sciara, there are the famous and breathtaking “ALCANTARA GORGES”; they’re canyons made of basaltic lava.
They were shaped during prehistoric times, following explosive lava flows, which came from the northern slope of the volcano Etna.
These flows, once they reached the old riverbed, slowly got cold and gave shape to the black basalts. Only the constant river’s flow and the following erosion unveiled the essence of this lavic unit.
